Abstract

150,738. Schmidding, W. [Firm of]. Sept. 6, 1919, [Convention date]. Exhaust, dealing with; exhaust-silencers.-Apparatus for purifying and silencing exhaust gases comprises a receptacle A containing coke for absorbing solid and liquid constituents and a separate purifier B for further cleansing and deodorizing the gases. The receptacle A has a perforated inlet pipe a filled with small pieces of coke and a perforated partition b on which small pieces of coke are placed. The receptacle A is kept hot by the gases flowing through the pipe a, and is fitted with a safety valve d and a drain cock. The purifier B comprises a series of chambers, the first chamber a' containing metal plates b<1> carrying sheets of felt or cloth. The chamber c<1> is divided by inclined passages d' having staggered perforations and lined with felt. Chambers e<1>, f<1> are filled with porous material and chambers g<1>, h<1> with sponges or woollen stuff and fitted with flap valves i<1>, k<1> lined with felt. The final chamber l<1> contains sponges soaked with a pleasant-smelling liquid.
