Description

(54) A METHOD OF PRODUCING COLOUR FAST DESIGNS AND PATTERNS ON TEXTILE MATERIALS (71) I, DEREK REGINALD MOORE, a British Subject, of 92 Station Road, Cropston, Leicestershire, and ADEMCO LIMITED a British Company of Lincoln Road, Cressex Industrial Estate, High Wycombe, Bucks, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The invention relates to methods of producing coloured substrate designs. The substrate may be fabric. The method may be effected using kits packaged in a box for sale as an educational game or for sale as a textile design aid.
According to the invention there is provided a method of colouring a substrate comprising cutting a paper having a sublimable dye layer on one side and an adhesive coating on the side opposite of the sublimable dye layer which coating is covered by a detachable sheet into the desired outline, detaching the sheet, adhering the cut-out paper to a.base until the base has the desired appearance, placing a substrate onto the base and applying heat to effect dye transfer from the base to the substrate.
The method may be refined to provide greater scope for design variations by using a masking layer on top of the sublimable dye layer. The masking layer may itself contain a sublimable dye layer. The shape of the paper to be cut out can be reproduced for example by tracing from a publication or drawing or by the use of carbon paper.
Preferably the method is performed using a kit of parts comprising a plurality of sheets of paper having differently coloured sublimable dye layers on one side and an adhesive coating on the side opposite of the sublimable dye layer, which coating is covered by a detachable sheet. When the desired shape has been cut, the sheet is detached to permit the paper to be adhered to a base. Conveniently the kit includes also the base and if desired cissors and fabrics suitable to act as substrates for the sublimable dyes.
Children can thus produce their own textile designs on appropriate fabrics generally containing synthetic yarns. The heat for dye sublimation may be provided quite easily by a domestic iron. The base may itself be covered with a sublimable dye layer to provide a background colour to the design provided by cut-out paper adhered onto the base.
The resulting coloured substrate has a nice even appearance as the sublimable dye layer can be applied evenly to the paper by printing. Used on polyester, the coloured design obtained can be fast to light, washing and rubbing providing a personalized colouring which will last the life time of a garment.
If required fine detail can be added to the design using a pen, felt-tip or brush to apply a suitable, preferably thickened, liquid containing sublimable dye.
In a particular embodiment, the kit may be sold as a box or bag containing a plurality of differently coloured sheets of paper measuring say 12" x 12", any one of which may be used as the base. The sheets have an adhesive at their rear covering by silicone-type paper which can be peeled away. The box or bag would be sold with appropriate instructions.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS 1. A method of colouring a substrate comprising cutting a paper having a sublimable dye layer on one side and an adhesive coating on the side opposite of the sublimable dye layer which coating is covered by a detachable sheet into the desired outline, detaching the sheet, adhering the cut-out paper to a base until the base has the desired appearance, placing a substrate onto the base and applying heat to effect dye transfer from the base to the substrate.
2. A kit of parts for colouring a substrate according to the method of claim 1 comprising a plurality of sheets of paper having differently coloured sublimable dye
