Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO PIPE JOINTS (71) We, SPUN CONCRETE LIMITED, a British Company of Rye Harbour, Sussex TN31 7TJ, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to pipe joints and has particular, but not exclusive application to joints in concrete pipelines installed by the techniqnue known as "thrust jacking", in which successive sections of pipe are inserted in the earth, each newly added section being employed to push forward those preceding it.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a pipe joint in which adjacent pipe ends are formed with respective external rebates each having a frusto-conical surface tapering towards the adjacent extremity of the pipe and on which an annular sealing gasket is mounted, and in which a separate sleeve having a plain bore spans the pipe end and has sealing engagement with both gaskets.
A pipe joint in accordance with the invention is described below, by way of example, with reference to the drawings accompanying the Provisional Specification, in which: Figure 1 is a scrap cross-section of two pipe ends and associated components prior to assembly; and Figure 2 is a corresponding view of the assembled pipe joint.
The adjacent end portions of two pipe sections 1 and 2 are identically shaped to have a shallow frustoconical rebate 3 spaced from the extreme end of the pipe iand a deeper frusto-conical rebate 4, taperiag towards the extremity of the pipe and over which is mounted a rubber sealing gasket 6 having the cross-section shown in the draw ing, comprising a main body portion 7 formed with outwardly projecting and rearwardly inclined finger-like projections 8. The gasket section is known in itself !and marketed by Hamilton Kent Manufacturing Co., under the trade name Tylox.
The assembly is completed by a separate sleeve 9 having a plain cylindrical bore and made preferably of plastics material, although metal or other materials may be employed. The outside diameter of the sleeve approximates to that of the pipe sections 1 and 2.
In the assembled joint, the sleeve seals tightly over both gaskets 6, compressing them into the taper wedge form clearly seen in Figure 2 which also shows that the sleeve has clearance from both pipe sections.
This arrangement provides a good watertight seal, but the resilience of the rubber gaskets, in combination with the spacing of the sleeve from the pipe section, accommodates some degree of misalignment of the pipe ends both radially and angularly.
Furthermore, in contrast to conventional arrangements, both ends of each pipe section are identically formed, rather than having one end formed as a spigot and the other as a socket.
It will, of course, be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the invention is not limited to the use of the Tylox gasket section described and illustrated, but thus many other forms of gasket material could be employed.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:- 1. A pipe joint in which adjacent pipe ends are formed with respective external rebates each having a frusto-conical surface tapering towards the adjacent extremity of the pipe and on which an annular sealing gasket is mounted, and in which a separate sleeve having a plain bore spans the pipe end and has sealing engagement with both gaskets.
2. A pipe joint according to claim 1, wherein each pipe end has a rebate portion spaced from the pipe end to receive with clearance the adjacent end portion of the sleeve, the outside diameter of which is approximately the same as that of the pipe.
3. A pipe joint according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the separate sleeve is of plastics material.
