Description

(54) ASSEMBLY FOR HOLDING MINERAL CUTTER PICKS (71) We, AUSTIN HOY AND COMPANY LIMITED, a British Company, of Station Works, Saunderton, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire HP14 4HS. do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent nay be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to assemblies for holding mineral cutter picks such as coal cutter pickw Conventiònally., . cutter - pick holders are secured to supports such as cutr- - chains, - the vanes of shearer drums, or discs or the like by welding. It is an object of the present invention to provide an assembly in which the pick holder can be removed from its asociated support in a simple manner when worn, and in which projecting parts in the assembly are avoided or minimised.
Accordingly the present invention pro vides an assembly for holding a mineral cutter pick, comprising a support in the form of a disc, vane or chain link adapted to form part of a mineral mining machine, and a holder adapted to receive a mineral cutter pick, the holder having a pair of lugs arranged to embrace a portion of the support and by means of which the holder is secured to the support, the support being formed with oppositely disposed recesses arranged to receive the lugs of the holder such that the outer surfaces of the lugs are flush with the sides of the support, and the lugs and recesses having mating faces rear wardly disposed with respect to the cutter direction of the assembly in use and extend ing transversely of said cutting direction whereby cutting forces on a pick in the holder are transferred to the disc, vane or chain link.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure I is a side elevation of a first embodiment showing a support and holder with a mineral cutter pick mounted thereon; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the support of Figure 1; Figure 3 is - a view similar to Figure 1 showing the holder of Figure 1 partially mounted on the support of Figure 2 and with the cutter pick removed; Figure 4 is a perspective view of the holder of Figure 1 and of its associated securing means; Figure 5 is a perspective view from above of the support of Figure 2; Figure 6 is a front elevation of the pick holder, the pick and the support of Figures 1 to S; and Figure 7 is a side elevation of a second form of pick holder.
In the drawings, there is shown a disc or vane 1 of a mineral mining machine (not shown) having mounted thereon a holder 2 formed with a forwardly extending projec tion 3 supporting a mineral cutter pick 4, such picks and the projections by which they are supported being fully described in the complete specification of our U.K. Patent No. 1142 141. The pick holder 2 is formed with a pair of lugs 5 which extend generally normally of the cutting direction of the pick and which are arranged to embrace the vane or disc 1 so as to mount the holder on the vane or disc. For this purpose the vane or disc 1 is formed with a pair of oppositely disposed recesses 7 corresponding in shape to the lugs, the recesses being separated by a central web 6 which fits between the lugs 5.
The web 6 has upward extension 8 which is arranged for reception in a correspondingly shaped groove (not shown) in the rear face 9 of the pick holder. The lugs are each formed with a bore 11 and the web 6 is formed with a corresponding bore 10 which align when the holder is mounted on the disc or vane 1 so that a pin 12 may be in serted in the bores to retain the holder on the vane or disc 1.
As can be seen from Figure 1, the cutting forces on the pick in use are absorbed directly by the vane or disc 1 and lateral forces on the pick are taken by the web 6 and by its rearward extension 8. As can be seen from Figure 6, the pick may be rotated on its support on the holder so that it overhangs cne side of the disc or vane and thus provides end clearance. It will also be noted from Figure 6 that the holder does not itself project from either side of the vane. The performance of the disc or vane is thus enhanced.
The arrangement shown in Figure 7 is similar to that described above except that the pick holder is adapted to support a double-ended V-shaped mineral cutter pick.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS 1. An assembly for holding a mineral cutter pick, comprising a support in the form of a disc, vane or chain link adapted to form part of a mineral mining machine, and a holder adapted to recieve a mineral cutter pick, the holder having a pair of lugs arranged to embrace a portion of the support and by means of which the holder is secured to the support, the support being formed with oppositely disposed recesses arranged to receive the lugs of the holder such that the outer surfaces of the lugs are flush with the sides of the support, and the lugs and recesses having mating faces rearwardly disposed with respect to the cutting direction of the assembly in use and extending transversely of said cutting direction whereby cutting forces on a pick in the holder are transferred to the disc, vane or chain link.
2. An assembly according to claim 1, in which the lugs are parallel and spaced apart.
3. An assembly according to claim 2, in which the lugs are formed with aligned bores through which a retaining pin is passed.
4. An assembly for holding a mineral cutter pick, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Claims (4)

**WARNING** start of CLMS field may overlap end of DESC **. seen from Figure 6, the pick may be rotated on its support on the holder so that it overhangs cne side of the disc or vane and thus provides end clearance. WHAT WE CLAIM IS
