Abstract
1439347 Shock absorbers MENASCO MFG CO 9 Oct 1973 [16 Oct 1972] 46960/73 Heading F2S A piston-cylinder shock absorber for a vehicle bumper is provided with an extension-limiting stop outside the cylinder. A sleeve 33 of plastics material-disposed in the annular space between the cylinder 12 and a surrounding sleeve 18 attached to the piston-rod 16-ensures a minimum separation between an annular stop ring 36 fixed to the cylinder 12 and the inturned and crimped end 32 of the sleeve 18. This prevents the piston 14 from contacting a piston-rod seal 28. The cylinder 12 contains a compressible liquid or solid, e.g. a silicone elastomer. The piston 14 is formed with two flow paths in parallel-one (40, or 40<SP>1</SP>, Figs. 2-7, not shown) being permanently open; the other 42 being closed by a sliding peripheral valve member (48, 48<SP>1</SP>) on impact, but open as shown on rebound (extension) movement.
