Abstract
1436475 Ammoxidation of olefins to nitriles UBE INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 Oct 1974 [16 Oct 1973] 43041/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] A process for producing acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile by catalytic ammoxidation of propylene or isobutylene comprises contacting a feed-gas mixture comprising propylene or isobutylene, ammonia and oxygen in the vapour phase at a temperature of 300 to 500 C. for a period of 0À3 to 20 seconds with a catalyst consisting essentially of an oxide of (A) molybdenum, (B) bismuth, (C) iron, (D) cobalt, (E) tungsten, (F) at least one metal selected from calcium and zinc and (E) at least one metal selected from titanium and indium in the atomic ratios defined by the following formula wherein X is the metal or metals selected from calcium and zinc and Y is the metal or metals selected from titanium and indium, and each of a, b, c, d, e and f is a positive number falling within the following ranges, a = 1 to 20, b = 0À2 to 5, c = 1 to 10, d = 0À05 to 3, e = 0À05 to 2 and f = 0À05 to 1, and g is a positive number which satisfies the average valency of the respective metals. Both fixed and fluidized bed operation are specified and the catalyst may be supported (e.g. on SiO 2 ). Specified diluents for the feed gas mixture are N 2 , CO 2 and steam, the latter preferably being present in an amount of at least 0À5 mole per mole of propylene or isobutylene for fixed bed operation. Preferred feed gas mixtures are those comprising 0À8-4À0 moles O 2 and 0À5-3À0 moles NH 3 per mole of propylene or isobutylene. The examples prepare acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile and comparative examples use catalysts comprising Mo, Bi, Fe and Co (W or Ca) and Mo, Bi, Co, W and Ca only.
