Abstract
1435658 Producing titanium INST TITANA 27 Aug 1974 37346/74 Heading C7D Ti is produced by pouring Mg and TiCl 4 into a reduction apparatus Fig. I e.g. via pipe connections 5, 6 to produce Ti mixed with by-products such as Mg and MgCl 2 in the reduction reaction, and removing the by-products from the Ti in a vacuum separation apparatus Fig. 2 provided with a condenser 7 by heating the reaction products above 900‹C, sublimating the Mg and MgCl 2 during vacuum separation and sprinkling cooling fluid, e.g. water supplied through spraying manifold 12, directly over the condenser in accordance with its surface temperature. The cooling fluid may be collected in the space between the condenser walls and jacket 11 and discharged through pipe connection 14. A removable condenser 7 is installed hermetically on the reduction apparatus to form the vacuum separation apparatus.
