Abstract

1434191 Aluminium-containing artificial resins; asymmetric aluminium compounds as additives; foundry moulds HARDMAN & HOLDEN Ltd 23 March 1973 [28 March 1972 2 Jan 1973] 14390/72 and 170/73 Headings C3P C3R C3N and C3Q [Also in Division A2] The invention comprises compounds of the Formula (I) or (II) where A, B and C are alkoxy (optionally substituted), aryloxy (optionally substituted), alkylcarboxyl (optionally substituted), arylcarboxyl (optionally substituted), a derivative of a dicarboxylic acid having one carboxyl group available for bonding directly to the aluminium, an alkyl sulphate, arylsulphonate, dialkylphosphate, dialkylphosphite, or diarylphosphite radical or an oxometal group DMA, where D is oxygen, M is divalent metal and A is as defined above (other than a group DMA) and Z is derived from a polymeric compound, e.g. an alkyd resin; phenol-formaldehyde resin; novolac-HMT blends and shellac; compositions comprising the above compounds and composites having the empirical Formulae (I) and (II), where A, B and C are as defined above and Z is derived from a particulate inorganic material, e.g. A1 and Zn powders, zinc phosphate, TiO 2 , Cu 2 O, china clay, BeSO 4 , zinc borate, silica, chrome yellow pigment, sand and furnace black, which has or is capable of forming reactive groups on its surface, by loss of hydrogen atoms; and the preparation of the above compounds and compositions by reacting with agitation, a compound of material, capable of providing the function Z, with an excess of an aluminium compound (III) Products of the invention are used as paints, fillers, sealing materials, varnishes and adhesives. Example 31 describes the preparation of a foundry core by reacting sand, powdered phenol and a novolak/HMT blend with compounds of the Formula (III) in isopropanol. Products of the above formula wherein Z is not polymeric can be used as promoters of rubber-silica filler reaction, fire retarders and fungicides.
