Abstract
1431551 Upgrading Ti ores LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 March 1973 [7 Jan 1972] 910/72 Heading C1N A weathered ilmenite or a leucoxene is activated to render it more readily acid leachable by maintaining it at 600-950‹ C.. for not more than 45 minutes under conditions which are substantially non-oxidizing and non-reducing, e.g. vacuum, N 2 , A. The atmosphere may be heated before contact with the ore. Contact time is preferably greater than 10 minutes. The treated ore may be oxidized in air at 700-850‹ C. to convert all, or a part of, Fe<SP>2+</SP> content to Fe<SP>3+</SP>. The treated ore may also be subjected to a magnetic separation before leaching. Leaching is preferably performed with HCl at above 100‹ C. in a continuous counter current fluidized bed process. The leachant preferably contains Fe<SP>2+</SP> ions initially. The leached solid may be calcined at 600- 700‹ C. for “-2 hours and then chlorinated under fluidized bed conditions to TiCl 4 from which pigment grade TiO 2 may be made.
