Abstract

1431431 Polymer-modified bitumen TARMAC ROADSTONE HOLDINGS Ltd 1 June 1973 [6 June 1972] 26258/72 Heading C3N A method of making a polymer modified bitumen material comprises the steps of forming a solution of a polymeric material in a solvent, both the solution and the solvent being solid at ambient temperature and the solution being miscible with bitumen when melted, and mixing the solution with bitumen which has been heated to a sufficiently high temperature to melt the solution. The solvent is preferably naphthalene and preferably the solid solution is of a concentration such that the melting point of the solid solution is approximately equal to that of the bitumen. The polymer is preferably a styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer. In the specific example a solid solution is formed from a mixture of naphthalene and styrenebutadiene-styrene copolymer (1 : 1) subsequent to which 50 grams of this solution is mixed with 450 grams of 50% bitumen heated to 110‹ C. If it is desired to coat an aggregate such as stone chippings the solid solution is introduced with the bitumen into a mixer together with the aggregate.
