Abstract

1429990 Container filling machine AMERICAN CAN CO 13 Aug 1973 [14 Aug 1972] 38172/73 Heading B8T A machine for filling containers 22 with gaseous liquids, so as to avoid foaming, consists of a tank 24 containing the liquid L and gas G at above atmospheric pressure, a flexible conduit 84 which supplies the liquid to a hollow cylindrical plunger 30 openable at its lower end by a stem valve 74 and sealed at its upper end. The plunger 30 is vertically moveable by means of a cam 64 and roller 66, the stem valve 74 being actuated by means of a cam/roller assembly (not shown). An annular sealing head 26, concentric and in sealing engagement with the plunger 30, is vertically moveable by a cam 38 to seal the open top of the container. A conduit 36, 36<SP>1</SP> supplies gas G from the tank 24 to the filler head via a three-way valve 28 which can be set for purging the can of air prior to filling or for providing pressure equalizing means with the atmosphere when the containers are full. A float chamber 32 integral with the sealing head 26 prevents spillage and permits fine adjustment of the amount of fluid dispensed by means of a floating ball 110 housed in a plunger 98 vertically adjustable inside the float chamber 32 by means of an adjusting bolt 106. Containers are positioned on the stand 124 and the plunger 30 lowered through the head 26 into the container, then sealing head 26 is lowered into partial engagement so centering the container by means of a bevelled lip on the container centring sleeve 48. After the container is purged of air using gas G supplied via conduit 36 and valve 28 the head 26 is fully sealed on to the container counter pressure gas G continuing to enter the space until pressures balance between the space and storage tank L. Valve 74 is then opened so that liquid flows by gravity to fill the can displaced gas returning via valve 28 and conduit 36, until the level of liquid actuates the float valve 32. The plunger is withdrawn filling the container with liquid and valve 74 closed. Valve 28 is turned to its second position which closes conduit 36 and opens conduit 60 to atmosphere so equalizing the pressure in the container. The sealing head is then lifted and the container passes on to a closing station.
