Abstract
1427704 Coalescing KNITMESH LTD and G A DAVIES 23 Feb 1973 [23 Dec 1971] 60188/71 Headings BID and BIT A coalescer has two types of coalescing elements one of which having a labyrinth of junctions formed by two dissimilar materials and the other being constructed of one material, and each element being particularly effective for a different range of droplet sizes. In Fig. 1, dispersion enters at 8, larger droplets coalesce in passing through element 1 and exit through holes 10 which may be in the top-bottom plate 4 or 5. The smaller droplets coalesce in passing through elements 2 and 3 and separate by gravity downstream of element 3. Elements 1 and 3 comprise layers of knitted two-ply mesh of stainless steel and polypropylene. Element 2 comprises wound concentric layers of polypropylene filaments (Fig. 3 not shown). Either of elements 1, 3 could be omitted. Separation of oil, kerosine or benzene/water mixtures and aerosols are mentioned. Other materials which may be used for elements 1 and 3 are metals, metal oxides and salts, glass (fibre) ceramics, PTFE and polyethylene.
