Abstract

1427220 Apparatus for melting and casting metals INRESA ALFONS SCHULTHEISS KG 13 Dec 1973 [8 Jan 1973] 58173/73 Heading B3F [Also in Division F4] An apparatus for casting metals comprises a mould 34 contained within a vacuum chamber 31, a chamber 10 in which metal can be melted by means 21, a passage 18 connecting the chambers and closable by a valve 19, and means 23 for introducing a gas at above atmospheric pressure into the chamber 10. The mould may be surrounded by a perforated iron cylinder 33 and may be supported on a plate 36 at the end of a vertically movable piston-rod 39 so that the mould may be pressed against a removable upper part 32 of the chamber 31. After melting the metal in the chamber 10 by an induction coil 21, the valve rod 18 is raised and the metal forced into the evacuated pre-heated mould by the pressure of inert gas in the chamber 10. The said pressure may be between 0À3 and 3À0 atmospheres and is such that it restricts the evaporation of components of the metal alloy. The crucible forming the chamber 10 may be lifted vertically and then pivoted horizontally to permit access to the chamber 31 and the valve rod 19 may be provided with a thermoelement 20.
