Abstract

1426736 Combustible electrolysis electrode KODAK Ltd 29 June 1973 [30 June 1972] 30782/72 Heading C7B A cathode useful in recovering Ag from used photographic fixer solutions comprises carbon fibres as the conductive material, and a solutionpermeable support therefor of combustible material. The support may comprise a non-woven fabric, an impermeable support of e.g. a cellulosic material or polyethylene terephthalate, to which is bonded the C, supported in a solution-permeable resin, or may comprise reinforcing fibres e.g. of cotton, nylon or polyester, with which the C fibres are felted. The cathode may form part of an electrode assembly enclosed in a perforated or liquid-tight housing, the latter forming a complete electrolytic cell. In Fig. 1, anodes and cathodes 11 each comprise a C-fibre sheet 14 encased in a non-woven fabric 13 supported on plastics frames 12. Rods 15 support an alternating anode/cathode array, the lower rods resting in saddles 18. Each electrode has a C fibre "pigtail" 16, 16<SP>1</SP> for effecting electrical connection. The cell or electrode assembly may be in a housing 21. The whole cell or the assembly may be of combustible material enabling incineration to recover deposited metal. An electrode assembly may be suitable for insertion into a recovery cell independently of the remaining cell components, in which case it is enclosed in a perforated housing, e.g. of cylindrical shape. Cathodes may comprise cylindrically convoluted plastics sheets with a C fibre solutionpermeable coating on both sides.
