Abstract

1426538 Removing waste products in industrial processes KOPPERS CO Inc 7 March 1974 [19 March 1973] 10359/74 Heading F4X In the operation of a coke oven battery wherein means are provided for directing, via a hood (not shown), into a collecting main 17 normally under negative pressure or partial vacuum (e.g. by a continuously operating fan 18), the fumes &c. emitted from a coke oven chamber during discharge of coke therefrom and wherein the collecting main 17 has opposite the coke oven chamber being discharged a flap 16 which is opened to provide a conduit for the fumes &c. between the hood and the collecting main (e.g. as described in Specification 1,378,441), a system is provided whereby in response to a signal generated when the coke guide 10 contacts and seats against the oven to be discharged and actuates a switch CGLS, a vent valve 15 in the main is opened to decrease the negative pressure therein before the appropriate flap 16 is opened in response to a timer TA actuated upon actuation of the switch CGLS. A fan damper 21 in the main 17 is normally closed when no coke is being discharged from an oven chamber. After the flap 16 has been opened the valve 15 is closed and the fan damper 21 is opened to restore the partial vacuum in the main so that it may be ready to receive the fumes &c. during discharge of the oven (e.g. into a quenching car). After the pushing of the coke from the oven, retraction of the coke guide 10 and consequent deactuation of the switch CGLS causes the valve 15 again to be opened and the damper 21 to be closed, in order to decrease the partial vacuum in the main 17, thus enabling, after a time delay, the flap 16 to be closed. Subsequently the valve 15 is closed and the fan damper 21 is opened to restore the negative pressure in the main 17. The sequence initiated by the switch CGLS may if necessary be delayed by the operator using a sequence-delay start switch 12.
