Abstract
1426381 Explosive compositions IRECO CHEMICALS 20 Feb 1973 [9 March 1972] 8266/73 Heading C1D An explosive composition comprises a fluid phase containing one or more dissolved inorganic oxidizing salts, a thickness, and a tetravalent titanium cross-linking agent, the fluid phase having a pH of at least 0À6, but not more than 4À2. The oxidizing salt may be ammonium, sodium, calcium or barium nitrate, or ammonium or an alkali metal chlorate or perchlorate, e.g. sodium perchlorate. Undissolved suspended ammonium nitrate particles may also be present. The solvent for the fluid phase may be water or a mixture of water with a lower alcohol, glycol, amine, or amide, e.g. formamide. Fuels and sensitizers may also be included, e.g. aluminium in powder, granule, or flake form, sulphur, gilsonite, coal, coke, carbon black, wood particles, sugar, starches or flours, ethylene glycol, methyl alcohol, fuel oil, benzene, toluene, xylene, or thiourea. Sodium nitrite or hydrogen peroxide may be present as a gassing agent. Suitable thickeners are hydrated guar-gum, tapioca flour, and carboxymethyl cellulose. The cross-linking agent may be a solution of titanium tetrachloride in a mixture of formamide and dimethyl formamide, a mixture of water and dimethyl formamide, or a mixture of acetic acid and methanol, or a solution of TiOSO 4 in formamide. Rapid and stable cross-linking is effected, gas bubbles and fuel oil droplets being maintained in suspension. Preferably the composition is oxygen-balanced.
