1425587 Upholstery PORTWAYS Ltd 15 March 1974 [16 Dec 1972] 23372/75 Divided out of 1425586 Heading A4M An upholstery unit includes as a wear resistant j layer, an insulating pad made of synthetic fibres e.g. polyester or nylon fibres and comprising a consolidated low-loft base layer and a high-loft surface layer. A low-loft material is defined as being material which has undergone treatment e.g. by needling to consolidate to a layer having only small free spaces between fibres, a high-loft material being defined as being a material which is unconsolidated or consolidated to a lesser extent so as to have greater free spaces between the fibres. The base layer may have a thickness of at least 1/16" and a weight of at least 3oz.sq.yd. and may be formed from a web of staple fibres which has been consolidated by needling. The surface layer may be of staple fibres, may have a thickness of at least “" and a weight of at least 5oz.sq.yd. and may be joined to the base layer by needling, interengaging fibres of the layers being optionally adhesively bonded e.g. by synthetic resin. The insulating pad may be placed between the cover and springs of a spring upholstery unit with the base adjacent to the springs and the surface layer adjacent to the cover. Alternatively, the pad may be placed between the frame and the padding e.g. foam plastics of a covered non-spring upholstery unit with the base layer engaging the frame.
