Abstract

1424977 Tetrapolymers TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 8 May 1974 20270/74 Heading C3P [Also in Division C5] A tetrapolymer consisting essentially of (i) 4-10 wt. per cent of a dialkylaminoalkyl methacrylate of the formula wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> are C 1-2 alkyl and A is alkanediyl(alkylene) of 1-5 carbon atoms (ii) 15-25 wt. per cent of a styrene compound of formula wherein R<SP>2</SP> is H or C 1-10 alkyl (iii) 40-60 wt. per cent of an alkylmethacrylate of formula wherein R<SP>3</SP> is C 10-14 alkyl (iv) 20-30 wt. per cent of an alkylmethacrylate of formula wherein R<SP>4</SP> is C 16-20 alkyl preferred tetrapolymers having an intrinsic viscosity in benzene at 77‹ F. of 0À22-2À87. Component (i) may be selected from N,N-dimethylaminoethyl, N,N- diethylaminoethyl, N,N - dimethylaminopropyl, N,N - diethylaminopropyl methacrylates; (ii) from styrene, vinyl toluene, p-tbutylstyrene, p - t - octylstyrene; (iii) from decyl, undecyl, dodecyl, tridecyl, tetradecyl methacrylates or mixtures thereof; (iv) from hexadecyl, heptadecyl, octadecyl, nonadecyl, eicosyl methacrylates or mixtures thereof. In the examples, N,N-dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate, lauryl methacrylate and stearyl methacrylate were polymerized with (I) vinyl toluene, (II)-(IV) styrene in naphthenic lubricating oil in the presence ofazobisisobutyronitrile and lauryl mercaptan. The polymers, in an amount 0À1-10% by wt. based on the total composition, are used as additives in mineral oil compositions (see Division C5).
