Abstract

1423125 Variable-speed gearing HYDROMATIK GmbH 12 July 1974 [24 July 1973] 31086/74 Heading F2D A continuously variable transmission system operable in a first mode, in which power is transmitted wholly through hydraulic means, and in a second mode in which power transmission is divided between the hydraulic means and mechanical gearing comprises, in one form, an input shaft 10 geared to a variable displacement hydraulic machine 201 and to a member 13 rotatable relatively to a shaft 32 which is geared to an output shaft 11, and a variable displacement hydraulic machine 202 connected hydraulically to the machine 201 and mechanically to a shaft 16 with sun wheels 25, 28. The displacement of machine 201 is variable in positive and negative senses from a neutral or zero displacement condition, and that of the machine 202 is variable between maximum and minimum displacement in one sense only. For operation in the first mode the machine 201 is set to zero displacement, 202 to maximum displacement, a clutch 14 is disengaged, and a positive brake 15 is applied to prevent rotation of a planet carrier 31. As the machine 201, now acting as a pump, is adjusted towards maximum displacement in either sense, corresponding to forward or reverse rotation of the output shaft 11, power is transmitted by the machine 202, acting as a motor, through the sun wheel 28, planet wheels 29 held against orbiting by the brake 15, and ring gear 30 which is fixed to the shaft 32. Maximum output speed in this mode is achieved when 201, 202 are at their maximum and minimum displacements respectively. To increase the output speed in the forward direction, the brake 15 is released and the clutch 14 engaged, such change-over being triggered, e.g. by a switching device 17. Power is now transmitted in part mechanically through the clutch 14, ring gear 27 and planets 26 carried by the ring gear 30 fixed to the shaft 32, and in part through the ring gear 30, planets 29 and sun wheel 28 to the machine 202, which now acts as a pump, and 201, acting as a motor. Output shaft speed is increased further by adjustment of 201 through its zero displacement condition to its maximum displacement in the opposite sense, when it again functions as a pump and 202 functions as a motor. A one-way clutch may take the place of the brake 15. A modification has a different arrangement of mechanical gearing, including intermeshing plants, one sun wheel on the shaft connected to the machine 202, a second sun wheel on a shaft connectible by a clutch with the wheel 22, and a brake acting on a ring gear.
