Abstract

1422813 Battery charging systems STAPLES DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 28 Aug 1974 [1 Oct 1973] 45677/73 Heading H2H A system whereby a battery connected to a pair of positive and negative terminals may be charged from an A.C. supply by way of a transformer T and full wave rectifiers D, D includes a changeover switch C1, in position B of which the negative terminal is connected directly to the D.C. supply and in position C to the D.C. supply by way of a resistor R. The switch C1 has a bimetal strip A with a wide current differential and a normal position B such that if a 12 volt battery is connected to the positive and negative terminals the switch C1 will remain in position B to charge the battery. If the connected battery is a 6 volt battery the high current causes the strip A to deflect to position B so that the resistor R produces a drop in voltage in order that the 6 volt battery is normally charged. The system is also provided with an overload device C3 and a self-resetting overload circuit breaker C2 which protects the system against a reversely connected battery or a short circuit across the positive and negative terminals. The circuit breaker C2 is a bimetal type and has a higher current setting than the switch C1.
