Abstract
1422363 Removal of HF from gases UOP Inc 23 May 1973 [24 May 1972] 24506/73 Heading C1A HF is removed from a gas by scrubbing with an AM hydroxide, the AM fluoride produced being converted to CaF 2 by Ca(OH) 2 ; the regenerated AM hydroxide is re-cycled. The gas may be relief gas from an HF catalysed alkylation unit and may contain hydrocarbons with 1 to 4 C atoms. KOH in 1-30% solution is the preferred absorbent. The Ca(OH) 2 may be added as a 0À1-2% solution or as the solid. In a typical apparatus the scrubber consists of a tower in two parts, the lower part being of larger diameter than the upper. The upper part is fitted with perforated trays and the lower with a heating coil. The HF containing gas is led in to the base of the upper part of the scrubber and leaves from the top. The absorbent solution may be led from the bottom of the scrubber to the top of either part of it directly or via the regenerator-settler, in which CaF 2 is formed and removed, or partly through each. Provision is made for using the solution for plant-neutralization purposes and means for adding Ca(OH) 2 and make-up KOH and water are provided.
