Abstract

1421494 Coated sheet materials COTEX UNION 23 May 1973 [23 May 1972] 24686/73 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Plastics sheets or films are coated with an adhesive-forming composition which is activated by contacting with water comprising a solution in an organic solvent (e.g. ethanol) of a copolymer which has an affinity for the plastics material (e.g. an acrylic copolymer), a polymeric vinyl ether which is soluble in both water and organic solvents, and additionally a water-activated adhesive material (e.g. a mixture of dextrin and carboxymethyl cellulose). The composition preferably also includes a fungicide, and the acrylic copolymer, when used, may be dissolved in a mixture of acetone and petrol. The plastics material may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene or polyvinyl chloride. The composition may be applied by such means as reverse roll coating, air-bed coating, curtain coating, spray guns, doctor blades or knurled rollers. A particular application of the invention is wall coverings.
