Abstract
1421244 Welding by fusion MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO KK 23 March 1973 14230/73 Heading B3R In butt-welding together the edge of a laminated metal body to the edge of another laminated or a non-laminated metal body, weld metal is deposited in lines extending obliquely to the lamination edges, so as to avoid inter-laminate cavities between the laminated body and the weld metal. In Fig. 5, two laminated plates 17, 17<SP>1</SP> are butt arc welded together by a consumable electrode wire 18 fed so that the direction of each deposited layer 19 makes an oblique angle a to laminate interface lines 32. A cooling strip 20 avoids flow of molten metal out of the welding gap and shapes the molten metal. Shielding gas may be fed through the strip 20. Deposited backing metal 21 is welded to the lowermost edge of each laminate, or a second, lower, cooling strip. In this embodiment, the description refers to the use of shielding gas of 50% A+50% CO 2 , and to procedures to reduce a to a minimum, in particular by introducing short (10-15 seconds) rest periods between each pass. In Fig. 7, cylindrical laminated tubular members are butt arc welded together using a consumable electrode wire 28 together with a cooling strip 29. The angle a referred to is that which the innermost laminate line 33 makes with each deposited layer 31, and the smaller the angle α, the greater the weld length per pass. In this embodiment the Specification refers to both submerged-arc and gas-shielded arc welding. The specification refers to laminated tubular bodies comprising spirally wound strips or multiple layers of hoops. The Specification includes description of prior arc welding of laminated tubes end-toend by conventional circumferential welding (Figs. 1-3, not shown) and by circumferential welding using buttering layers (Fig. 4, not shown).
