Abstract

1420591 Twistlocks E C COLE 21 Dec 1972 [29 Sept 1971 19 May 1972] 45252/71 and 23572/72 Heading E2B In a twistlock of the kind comprising a bolt 120 having a shaft 122 mounted for axial movement in a hollow housing 104 and rotatable about its longitudinal axis, the bolt having a head 124 provided with at least one radial projection and being movable between a withdrawn position in which the head is inside the housing, a release position in which the head is outside the housing and a locking position wherein the head is outside the housing and has been rotated so that the or each radial projection extends in a direction different from that in which it extends when the bolt is in its release position, axial movement of the bolt from its withdrawn to its release position is effected by linear movement of a bolt operating means 169 disposed externally of the housing and below the head, and clamping means is provided and which is operative, when the bolt is in its looking position, to cause the or each projection to be tightened against the base of a corner fitting of a freight container. As shown, the bolt 120 is fully retractably into the housing 104 and adjustable for various thicknesses 102a --- 102c of corner fitting by a clamping nut 162 screwed on the shaft 122 and provided with arms 166 between two of which, when the bolt is in a locking position, is disposed a locking peg 174. The shaft is slidable in a spacer sleeve 132 the lower end 138 of which is engaged by a catch 152 to retain the bolt in the release position thereof. Rotation of the bolt by the handle 169 to the locking position causes a pin 136 carried by the shaft to displace the catch, against the bias of a rubber pad 154a so that when the bolt is again turned to the release position the bolt and sleeve can move downwardly by gravity to the fully retracted position; the pin is engageable in grooves in the end 138 of the sleeve in both the release and locking positions of the bolt. A compression spring 168 which urges the head 124 towards the housing is capable of being compressed into a solid condition to form a washer and the sleeve is urged by a spring 140 towards the pin 136.
