Abstract
1418488 Steelmaking USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 5 Dec 1972 [6 Dec 1971 14 Nov 1972] 56111/72 Heading C7D [Also in Division F4] In the Open Hearth, Electric-Arc and bottomblown converter steelmaking processes, oxygen with entrained lime powder is blown into the bath through the central portion of submerged concentric tuyeres, a jacketing gas being supplied through the outer annular portion. In addition, oxygen, also surrounded by a jacketing gas, is delivered through a tuyere in the side of the furnace at an angle between 20 degrees above and 20 degrees below the horizontal and at least 12" above the bath surface. The jacketing gas may be a hydrocarbon, e.g. propane, butane, natural gas, or an inert gas, e.g. Ar, N 2 .
