Abstract
1416487 End face seals V V IVANOV and B S GORITSKY 16 Aug 1973 38943/73 Heading F2B In an end face seal for a rotary shaft 2 where it extends through a housing 5 containing a medium to be sealed comprising a rotary ring 1 secured to the shaft and a non-rotary cooperating ring 4 sealed to the housing, the sealing face of each ring is provided with recesses 9, 10, the number of recesses in one ring differing from the number in the other ring. A spring 7 urges the ring 4 towards the ring 1. The rings 1 and 4 are sealed to the shaft and housing by sealing rings 3 and 6 respectively. In operation, when the shaft rotates, the recesses 9 form chambers alternately with the face of the ring 4 and the recesses 10 thereby causing fluid pressure pulsations in the sealing gap 8 which, it is stated, improve leakage control and lubrication between the sealing faces. In a modification, Fig. 3, the recesses 10 communicate through a passage 11 with a source of sealing fluid at a pressure exceeding that of the sealed medium. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the recesses (9) connect through a passage (12) with the sealed medium.
