Abstract

1411659 Fermentation of polluted water P R JEFFCOATE J HUTCHINSON R D SHEFFIELD J M ERDE and C A WALTER [trading as SANDFORD FAWCETT WILTON & BELL] 31 May 1974 [4 June 1973] 26623/73 Heading C1C Water is pumped by feeding into a lagoon a slurry containing dissolved and suspended organic waste matter, sealing the surface of the lagoon with a heat- and air-tight float structure, initiating anaerobic fermentation, agitating, separating the purified water from the biological culture effecting the purification, and withdrawing the water from the lagoon. One form of the apparatus is shown in the Figure, and utilizes a floating roof (52) made of butyl rubber sheet (55) supporting a weatherresistant thermal lagging (56) which is of lightweight, preferably cellular, material. There is a mixing device (57) and an annular gas distribution chamber (63). A simpler apparatus utilizes float slabs made of cellular plastics (e.g. polystyrene) or of sealed papyrus bundles covered with an air-tight membrane (e.g. butyl rubber).
