Abstract

1411371 Electrolytically preparing glyoxylic acid and electrolytically removing oxalic acid therefrom NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 13 Oct 1972 [19 July 1971] 33849/71 Heading C7B [Also in Division C2] Glyoxylic acid is electrolytically prepared by cathodic reduction of oxalic acid at a solid cathode with a catholyte which is substantially free from supporting electrolyte, the process being such that over-reduction of the oxalic acid to glycollic acid is substantially avoided (e.g. by cooling the catholyte or cathode). Specified conditions are:- a catholyte comprising a saturated or supersaturated solution of oxalic acid in water or aqueous ethanol; an anolyte comprising an aqueous solution of H 2 SO 4 , HClO 4 or H 3 PO 4 ; the anolyte and catholyte separated by a permeable or semi-permeable membrane, e.g. a cation exchange membrane; a cathode of Pb, Cd, Tl or of various Hg amalgams; an anode of Pb, graphite, Pt, or platinized Ti; a temperature of not greater than 20 C (e.g. obtained by circulating water within the cathode); and a cathode potential not more negative than - 1.50v with reference to a saturated calomel electrode. When the process is stopped, any remaining oxalic acid can be removed from the resultant solution containing oxalic acid and glyoxylic acid by selective precipitation as the Ca salt or by anodic oxidation. For this removal of oxalic acid, specified conditions are:- a catholyte of H 2 SO 4 , HClO 4 or H 3 PO 4 ; a cathode of C, Cu, Pb, Monel (Trade Mark) metal, Ni or Pt; and an anode of graphite such as a fluidized bed or packed, e.g. bipolar, bed. The anodic oxidation converts the oxalic acid to CO 2 but the bipolar bed also converts a proportion of the oxalic acid to glyoxylic acid. In one alternative, the two stages for the production of pure glyoxylic acid are combined. A cell is used having a Pb cathode, a graphite anode, as catholyte an aqueous solution of oxalic acid, and as anolyte an aqueous solution of glyoxylic acid containing traces of oxalic acid which has been produced in the electro-reduction of oxalic acid. After operation, the anolyte is removed to be worked up for glyoxylic acid, the catholyte transferred to the anode compartment and the cathode compartment is charged with fresh oxalic acid solution.
