Abstract

1411340 Brushes with synthetic bristles E S BISCHOFF 16 Feb 1973 [22 March 1972] 7774/73 Heading A4K [Also in Division B5] A brush having bristles of synthetic plastics material secured together by melting the ends of the bristles is formed by placing a bundle of bristles in a mould 4 formed with a shoulder 6, moving a plunger 3 longitudinally of the bristles such that the bristles are pressed against the shoulder 6 to effectively form two cavities 15b, 15a in the mould, melting the end portions of the bristles in the cavity 15b, pressing the melted bristle material with a platen, cooling the material and removing the brush from the mould by upward movement of the plunger 3. The platen may be a brush handle made of a material which will fuse with the molten bristle material or seal to the bristle material by forming an indentation 12 in the handle. If a handleless brush is required, the platen may be of metal, Fig.8 (not shown) which does not adhere to the fused bristle material. A ferrule 14 of the same material as the bristles or of a different material which will adhere to the fused bristle material may be placed in the cavity 15b of the mould before the bristles are inserted.
