Abstract

1410841 Foamed refractory material ADVANCED MATERIALS ENG Ltd 1 Oct 1973 [30 June 1972] 45782/73 Heading C1A Foamed refractory material is produced by mixing together precursors which react to give a foamable resin, a blowing agent for the resin and silicon, to form a green foam, debonding the green foam and heating the foam in an atmosphere of or containing nitrogen to convert the silicon to silicon nitride. The preferred precursors are such as to give a polyurethane or phenolic resin and may additionally contain bubble control agents (e.g. silicones) and a polymerization catalyst. The mixing of the silicon with the other ingredients is facilitated by incorporating a liquid diluent, e.g. methyl ethyl ketone, acetone, xylene or chlorinated hydrocarbon. The debonding step is preferably carried out by heating in air (e.g. at 350‹ C. for 24 hours). An electrically conducting refractory foam of silicon nitride is prepared by incorporating carbon in addition to silicon in the green foam mix and heating the green foam under conditions such that a material comprising silicon nitride containing an interconnecting network of silicon carbide is formed.
