Abstract

1409788 Fluent fuel combustion apparatus PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO 15 Dec 1972 [15 Dec 1971 27 March 1972] 58139/72 Heading F4B [Also in Division F1] To reduce formation of pollutants, particularly nitrogen oxides, in a combustion chamber 16, Fig. 1, primary, secondary and tertiary air (or other oxidant) is introduced into the latter as three distinct streams, the secondary air being preheated to a temperature at least 100‹ F. higher than that of the primary air, and the tertiary air being preheated by heat exchange at 24 with exhaust gases leaving a heat energy utilization device 22 supplied with combustion gases from chamber 16. Device 22 may be a turbine (25, Fig. 2, not shown) or a steam boiler. In one arrangement, Fig. 3, the combustion chamber is substantially the same as that shown in Fig. 1 of Application No. 58138 with the exception that preheated tertiary air from heat exchanger 24 is supplied through pipe 15 to the annular, finned, chamber 48<SP>1</SP> surrounding the primary combustion zone, where it is further heated before entering the combustion gases through openings 74. An annular baffle 68 closes the upstream end of chamber 48<SP>1</SP>. The secondary air is preheated in flowing through the annular space 64 outwardly of chamber 48<SP>1</SP> before entering the combustion gases through ducts 72 and openings 70. In a modification, Fig. 12, the secondary air is introduced through ducts 72<SP>1</SP> after being preheated in a separate heat exchanger or by mixture with some of the air flowing from heat exchanger 24 through pipe 15<SP>1</SP>. Valves may control the mixing. Temperatures and other operating conditions are specified.
