Abstract

1408998 Moulding porous ceramic bodies BATTELLE-INSTITUT eV 24 Aug 1973 [31 Aug 1972] 40231/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division C1] Ceramic materials having an open pore structure are produced by a method comprising (a) providing a core defining the pores and interconnecting passages by sticking together spherical bodies, (b) casting a ceramic material around the core, (c) hardening the ceramic material and (d) removing the core. The ceramic material may be glass ceramic, glass, nitrides, oxides, silicides or borides. In one example, a core is produced by packing polystyrene balls into a hollow cylinder, and contacting the balls with a solvent so that their touching surfaces adhere to form "bridges" between the balls. A slip of a mixture of alumina and silica is cast around this core, the water removed from the slip to partially harden the ceramic mixture, and the polystyrene depolymerized by heating to remove the core structure. Further heating to 1600‹ C. provides final hardening of the ceramic mixture which reacts to form mullite. The core may alternatively be produced by sticking together pore forming bodies with adhesive or by sintering. Suitable materials for the bodies include soluble or low melting salts, plastics, wax, metals or alloys. The products are suitable for use as filters or gas heated radiant elements.
