Abstract

1408437 Vaccines C-VET Ltd 16 Oct 1973 [16 Oct 1972] 47627/72 Heading A5B A vaccine comprises an antigenic material and is in the form of a multiple oil-water emulsion having a continuous aqueous phase and a primary oil phase in which a secondary aqueous phase is disposed, the concentration of oil in the vaccine being less than 20% by volume, and the percentage of antigenic material in the secondary aqueous phase being from 1 to 20%, the remainder of the antigenic material being present in the continuous aqueous phase. The vaccine may be prepared by subjecting to emulsifying conditions a waterin-oil emulsion containing 1 to 20% of the antigenic material in its aqueous phase, an emulsifying agent and an aqueous medium containing the remainder of the antigenic material, to form a multiple oil-water-emulsion, the proportions of water-in-oil emulsion, emulsifying agent and aqueous medium being such that the concentration of oil in the vaccine is less than 20% by volume. The antigenic material is suitable for the immunisation of domestic animals or livestock. The vaccine may be injected or locally administered to the animal. A vaccine suitabel for immunising cats comprises an antigen derived from feline panleucopenia virus, feline rhinotracheitis virus or feline picornavirus. A vaccine suitable for immunising dogs comprises an antigen derived from canine parainfluenza (SV5-like) virus, or canine adeno (1 and 2) viruses. Cattle may be immunised with a vaccine which comprises a mixture of parainfluenza 3, reo, adeno, bovine diarrhoea and infectious bovine rhinotracheitis. The vaccine may be administered to cattle by more than one injection, the second injection being administered after 1 to 6 weeks.
