Abstract

1407978 Producing ceramic microspheres UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 29 Sept 1972 [29 Sept 1971] 45373/71 Heading F4G In the production of nuclear fuels, catalysts, or ceramics, gel microspheres are formed by gelation, are dried without surface pitting or cracking by subjecting them to microwave radiation (e.g. at 2450 MHz), and are sintered to produce ceramic microspheres. The microspheres are placed in an open container which is then located in an oven enclosure to which microwave energy is transmitted via a wave guide from a magnetron. A flow of air is maintained through the oven to prevent condensation. The microwaves may be applied by a helical coil wound around a column of moving material. The microspheres may be formed with a flow of water into monolayers, on the tiers of a stand, or a belt passing through a microwave tunnel. The microspheres may be tumbled while exposed to microwave radiation, in a rotary oven, or fluidized using a gas flow, or otherwise agitated.
