Abstract

1406789 Microwave sterilisation WAVE ENERGY SYSTEMS INC 3 April 1973 15841/73 Heading A5G The surfaces of materials or articles, e.g. surgical instruments, are sterilised by microwave radiation in a conventional microwave oven after having been sealed in a container at least partly transparent to the sterilising radiation together with a source of water vapour sufficient to create at least 50% relative humidity inside the container during irradiation. Suitable sources are water, and saline solution which may be allowed to evaporate into the air in the container or which may be "aerosolized" to give a "super-saturated" atmosphere. An additional sterilising gas may be introduced into the container to assist in sterilising the materials or articles.
