Abstract

1400993 Electro-photographic materials AGFA-GEVAERT 30 Oct 1972 [10 Nov 1971] 52287/71 Heading G2C [Also in Division H1] In an electro-photographic process comprises a photo-conductive element comprises a compound, wherein Z 1 represents the atoms necessary to complete a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic nucleus, R 1 is hydrogen, an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radical or an alkylene group ring-closed with one C atom in the peri-position of the Zi ring and R 2 is hydrogen or C 1 -C 4 alkyl. Preferably the photo-conductive compound has the Formula:- wherein A is a bivalent organic radical which can be introduced by alkylation e.g. ethylene or phenylene. The compound may be applied from the molten state on to a suitable substrate or in a binder containing at least 5% of the compound. Numerous examples of binders are listed. Other photo-conductive materials may be incorporated, e.g. S, Se, oxides, sulphides and selenides of Zn, Cd, Hg, Sb, Bi, Pb, anthracene, anthraquinone and poly-N-vinyl carbazole. Spectral sensitizers include methine dyes, of which many examples are listed, xanthene dyes and triarylmethane dyes. The photo-conductive layer may also include compounds increasing the photoconductivity e.g. non-conic Lewis acids forming a charge-transfer complex e.g. carboxylic acid anhydrides, quinones containing electronattracting substituents, compounds containing =C(CN) 2 , specified chlorine and/or cyano containing polymers also functioning as binders, and diazonium compounds e.g. p-nitrobenzenediazonium chloride. The conductive base may be a plate of Al, Zn, Cu, Sn, Fe or Pb, an insulating layer e.g. paper coated with Ag, Sn, Al, T 1 O 2 , or copper iodide, a conductive polymer e.g. one containing quaternary nitrogen atoms, or gelatine containing carbon or metal particles. In use the device may be charged before, simultaneously with or after exposure.
