Abstract
1499168 Fire-retarded polyurethane foams HAIRLOK Ltd 1 Nov 1976 [19 Nov 1975] 47664/75 Heading C3R [Also in Division B2] High resilience flexible polyurethane foams (defined by reference to a described test procedure) are made fire-retardant with an impregnant which: (i) comprises a flexible polymeric binder which is inherently fire-retardant or contains fire-retarding additives; (ii) is present after impregnation throughout the foam structure as a coating thereon but retains the open cell structure of the foam, and (iii) chars on heating to form a protective carbonaceous body in which the cell structure is preserved. Specified inherently fire-retardant polymeric binders are polychloroprene rubber and plasticized poly-vinyl or vinylidene chloride; polymers which may be used with fire retardant additives are styrene-butadiene rubbers and polyacrylates. Even with the former additives such as halogen compounds, S 2 O 3 and especially hydrated alumina (which contributes to the char layer) are advantageous.
