Abstract

1498706 Recovering fibre from waste material KEBE ANSTALT FUR VERTRIEB VON ANLAGEN FUR KEHRICHTBESEITIGUNG 26 March 1975 [23 April 1974] 12768/75 Heading D1F [Also in Division B2] Paper fibres are recovered from solid refuse material by screening it to separate fine and coarse components (which latter include the fibres), macerating the coarse components in water so that the fibres form a suspension therein, separating the fibres from other materials in suspension, removing the paper fibres and, optionally, heating them (to reduce their water content) as by burning others of the coarse materials. The water is recycled and the fine components may be recovered to form compost. In the operation of the apparatus represented in Fig. 1, domestic waste is fed continuously at 2 into and through a rotary screen 1 through which fine particles, at least partly organic, pass to a recovery conveyor 3. Coarse materials travel on path 4 and into a perforated cylindrical rotor 5 rotating partly immersed in water (which may be heated) in a tank. Remanent coarse materials move on to a recovery path 7 but paper fibres and other fractions dispersed in water pass through the rotor wall thence through a duct 8 to a separating or densifying unit 10 (water from which returns to the tank via duct 9) and the paper fibres are recovered at 12. Surplus water may be removed from fibres by means of a rotary sieve filter, vibrating chute or squeezee rollers (not shown) or by combustion of materials from path 7. In the apparatus of Fig. 2, the rotating rotor 5 receives material from a hopper 22 and discharges the coarser parts from an outlet 5A into section 6A of tank 6 (separated by a perforated baffle 6B from a section directly beneath rotor 5) whence it is recovered from the sloping bottom thereof as by use of a rake 24. In a modification, Fig. 4, water from duct 9 is discharged directly into rotor 5 but (in both forms of apparatus) a part may be discharged over the rotor; a portion 5B of the rotor allows the material to be raised, above the water level in tank 6 prior to discharge, as by means of a group of vanes and/or a wing or group thereof on the interior of wall (of) 5B or along the entire rotor 5 (which also facilitate the discharge of the material). The feed of material along the rotor may be assisted by water jet as adjustably inclining the rotor axis or rotor contour and/or projections therein.
