Abstract

1498007 Disc brakes; pads; damping vibration GIRLING Ltd 16 Jan 1975 [22 Jan 1974 13 Feb 1974] 03003/74 and 6445/74 Heading F2E A friction pad assembly of a disc brake is secured to a support (viz. a piston or a caliper of the brake) by means of a locating strip 2 of material coated on both sides with a layer of adhesive 3, by which layers 3 the strip 2 is attached to the friction pad assembly and the support respectively. The strip 2 may be of metal (e.g. aluminium): The locating strip 1 may be cut from a roll with the coated faces protected by "peel-off" layers of oiled paper: the adhesive may be based on uncured rubber embedded in silk. In the form of strip illustrated in Fig. 2 (not shown) the metal strip (2) is of laminated construction comprising two metal layers (5) interconnected by resilient material 6 which may comprise an additional layer of adhesive. Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates a strip (1) secured to an hydraulic piston, and Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates a strip (1) secured in a recess (11) of a disc brake yoke (8) which recess (11) also receives at least partially an indirectly actuated friction pad assembly. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the support againcomprises an hydraulic piston (7) and the strip (1) is shown received in a recess (15) in a backing plate (13) of a friction pad assembly (12): The recess may be circular (Fig. 6, not shown) or in the form of a transverse slot (Fig. 7, not shown). In another construction (Fig. 8, not shown) strips (1) are applied diagonally to a planar face of the backing plate (13) so that the piston (7) acts on the pad assembly only over four angularly spaced contact areas (16). In the construction of Fig. 9 (not shown) a strip (1) is applied to a planar face of the backing plate (13) for engagement by a yoke. Figs. 10-12 illustrate a disc brake having friction pad assemblies 18 operable by opposed pistons 19. Between each piston 19 and the backing plate 22 of the respective pad assembly 18 is interposed a shim 23 having the form of the strip of Fig. 1 or Fig. 2. A part 24 of each shim 23 is cut-out to restrict the area of contact of the pistons 19 therewith. The shims 23 restrict and damp any relative movement, radial or circumferential between the pistons 19 and the pad assemblies 18.
