Abstract

1497187 Seaming non-metallic sheet material ROBERTS CONSOLIDATED INDUSTRIES Inc 2 Dec 1975 [28 April 1975] 49520/75 Heading B5K An electric iron 10 for joining two carpet sections 21, with their edges 20 abutting, by means of a heat sensitive adhesive tape 23, comprises an electrically heatable sole plate portion 11 and a superstructure portion 13 extending upwardly from the portion 11, the portion 13 having on its outer surface a pair of outwardly extending ridges 17 spaced upwardly from the portion 11, the ridges 17 being constructed to engage and limit upward movement of the edges 20 when the sole plate 12 is inserted, and longitudinally moved, between the edges 20 and the tape 23. As shown, the iron 10 has a handle 14 and a lead 16 for supplying electrical current to means (not shown) for heating the sole plate 12 is connected to the leading edge of the portion 13. Each longitudinal ridge 17 provides an overhanging lip 18 which is tapered downwardly from the leading edge to the trailing edge thereof. In use, the carpet sections 21 are laid on a base 22a with their edges 20 in abutment over a heat sensitive adhesive tape 23 having a hot melt adhesive strip 24. The heated iron 10 is inserted between the abutting edges 20 at one end thereof and is moved continuously or intermittently along the tape 23 to melt the adhesive 24. The operator presses down the trailing edges 20 on to the melted adhesive to effect joining. The ridges 17 limit the upward movement of the edges 20 and assist in centring the iron as it is moved.
