Abstract

1495705 Making tool, stainless or alloy steel sintered articles R J DAIN and H FORD 18 March 1975 [18 Dec 1973] 58441/73 Heading C7D Sintered articles of tool, stainless or alloy steel are made from the atomized water quenched powder which is annealed at sub atmospheric pressure, compacted, the compacted heated at above 900‹C in a vacuum to reduce the oxygen to not more than 400 p.p.m. and then liquid phase sintered or impregnated with another metal. The powder may be compacted isostatically, optionally on a mandrel which may then be removed or left to form a part of the composite sintered body. The powder is annealed at about 870‹C and cooled to 600-700‹C at 25-50‹C/hr. Sufficient C powder is added to effect deoxidation and give the required C content in the sintered product. Ag, Cu or Co may be impregnated into the compact during sintering.
