Abstract
1495190 Annealing glass PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 Sept 1975 [24 Sept 1974] 38588/75 Heading C1M [Also in Division F4] Glass articles are annealed by conveying them on a metal gauze belt 11 through a furnace tunnel 13 which is divided into zones having a temperature-controlled gas flow which is maintained in a direction transverse to the direction of transport of the articles. The gas flows in the individual zones are controllable independently of each other by fans 15 and heating elements 19 and the gas flow across the zones is varied by the size of the flow apertures 23 and 27 in the zone partitions 21 and 25. The furnace may have a heating section 3 with heating zones 5 followed by a cooling section 7 with cooling zones 9. The apertures 23 in the heating zone partitions 21 can be progressively increased along the length of each zone so that gas flow increases and thus a linear temperature gradient is maintained in each zone. Similarly in the cooling section the apertures 27 can be progressively increased so that a linear cooling gradient is maintained.
