Abstract

1493267 Radiation beam collimators FERRANTI Ltd 3 Dec 1975 [3 Dec 1974] 52152/74 Heading H5R A collimator for a beam of penetrating ionizing radiation, e.g. gamma-rays, is made by forming a pattern of intersecting grooves 12, 13, 14, 15 in one surface 11 of a block 10 of material transparent to the radiation, at least partly filling the grooves with powder of a metal having a high radiation absorption coefficient, and closing the grooves with a cover of material transparent to the radiation to retain the powder in the grooves. The block and cover may be of acrylic or other plastics, and the powder may be of tungsten or lead. As shown, the grooves are in two orthogonal sets, with each set converging from the surface 11. The ends of the grooves are closed by a sleeve around the block, and if the grooves are only partially filled with powder the cover has projections extending into the grooves to retain the powder, which is compacted. The collimator is described for use with radiation emitted by a radio-isotope in a patient's body, and delimits an inspection field of the body.
