1491361 Stabilized ZrO 2 or HfO 2 crystals FIZICHE INST IM PN LEBEDEVA AKAD NAUK SSSR 21 Jan 1975 2507/75 Heading ClA Single crystals based on ZrO 2 or HfO 2 contain as a stabilizer an oxide of Sc or one of elements of atomic number 58-71. The crystals preferably have a ZrO 2 /HfO 2 :stabilizer ratio of 70-95:30-5. The crystals may further contain 0À01-5% of a transition metal oxide or an oxide of a different element of atomic number 58-71 to provide coloration. The crystals are preferably grown from the melt by the Stockbarger method. The crystals may be used as artificial gems, lenses or laser elements.
