Abstract

148,759. Signal Ges. July 31, 1919, [Convention date]. Addition to 147,939. Subaqueous audible signals.-In apparatus for producing and receiving sounds, particularly in subaqueous signalling, in which the sound energy is transferred between a diaphragm and the sound producer or receiver proper through a flat chamber, as described in the parent Specification, the diaphragm or other vibrating member and the chamber are each tuned to the same pitch. The chamber and its sound-transmitting opening may be variable in size. Fig. 1 shows the chamber 4 closed on one side by a diaphragm 1 and having on the opposite side a diaphragm or plate 3 with an orifice 5 communicating with a tube 6 leading the sound to or from the sound detector or producer proper, not shown. The device may be applied to an opening in the hull of a ship with the diaphragm 1 exposed to the water, or a liquid filled chamber may be provided within the hull, the ship's shell forming one side of the chamber, and the device may be applied to or placed within this chamber. The damping and coupling of the device give resonance to two frequencies as shown in Fig. 2, in which abscissµ represent frequencies, and ordinates loudness, and the signalling frequency used is preferably that represented by a point n corresponding with the shallow depression s between the resonance frequencies.
