Abstract

1486195 Cellular concretes JOHN LAING & SON Ltd 12 Dec 1974 [12 Dec 1973] 57659/73 Heading C3N [Also in Divisions C1 and E1] A hardened concrete or mortar formulation of which the controlled deformation characteristics under compression loading render it particularly suitable for use as a support for the roof of a mine-working excavation, consists essentially of a cementitious water-hardened binding agent, an aggregate, from 5% to 60% by volume of entrained air and fibres in an amount of from above 2À2% to 22% by weight of the binding agent. The formulation may contain Portland cement or high-alumina cement, natural or synthetic aggregate of up to 1¢ inches diameter with an aggregate: cement ratio of below 10 : 1 and fibres with lengths of up to 2 inches. A cribbage of aspect ratio 3 : 1 may be formed of blocks of the concrete of size 10 to 60 inches long and 4 to 40 square inches average cross-sectional area (see Fig. 1). The blocks may have the configurations depicted in Figs. 2 and 3. In Fig. 2, the grooves 4 are deeper than the projections 5. The waisted block (Fig. 3) may contain 3% by volume of 40 mm. polypropylene fibres, as fibrous constituent, and three figureof-eight polypropylene cords with the loops inside the wider portions for reinforcement. The blocks may be shrinkwrapped in polymer film. The deformation characteristics of the concrete provide for a controlled gradual settlement of the supported roof.
