Abstract

1473235 Lubricants USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 1 May 1974 [18 May 1973] 19139/74 Heading C5F [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] A metal substrate is lubricated during a forming or shaping step by a two-component coating applied beforehand from an aqueous dispersion and then dried. The first component is a copolymer of ethylene which forms a film adherent to the metal, e.g. a copolymer with acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, crotonic acid, salts and esters of these acids or vinyl acetate, or a terpolymer. The second component is a lubricant that is substantially insoluble in the copolymer and is an animal, vegetable, mineral, or synthetic oil, a fat, a soap, a fatty ester, a grease, a wax, or a mixture of these. After forming, the coating may be removed by cleaning with an alkaline detergent. The dispersion may contain enough alkali to form a watersoluble or dispersible salt or ionomer of the copolymer; this alkali may be ammonia or an aromatic amine, which will volatilize in the drying step. It may also contain a solid lubricant, e.g. graphite, MoS 2 , carbon monofluoride, PTPE, nylon, talc, mica, oxide pigment or kaolin clay. The compositions used in the examples comprise: as first component, an ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer by itself or with polyvinyl alcohol or with both polyvinyl alcohol and an ethylene-methacrylic acid copolymer partly neutralized with sodium hydroxide; as oil phase, mineral oil alone or mixed with lard oil, or lard oil mixed with oleic acid or ammonium oleate; they also contain added surfactants, and two have added fillers, MoS 2 in one, talc or iron oxide in the other.
