Abstract

1473016 Composition comprising a colour former CIBA-GEIGY AG 22 April 1975 [23 Jan 1975] 2928/75 Headings C4A and C4P [Also in Division D2] A composition comprises a dispersion of a colour former in a mixture of water and a water-miscible organic solvent for the colour former. The organic solvent may be acetone, methoxyethanol, ethoxyethanol, dimethyl formamide or dimethyl sulphoxide. The composition may also contain a polymer latex, e.g. an acrylic latex, starch and a dyestuff or pigment. Suitable colour formers are lactone, spyropyran or related, leuco or metal complex forming colour formers. Preferably the colour formers are azo compounds of specified formulae. An imageproducing system comprises a paper substrate impregnated or coated with the composition and a carrier material impregnated with a solution of an organic acid in a weakly volatile high boiling solvent having a boiling point of at least 150‹ C. The paper must be neutral or alkaline sized. The carrier material may be a fabric, a paper material, a felt or fabric pad or a felttipped pen. The composition may be prepared by dissolving a colour former in a watermiscible organic solvent and stirring the resulting solution into water. Azo compounds suitable for use as the colour former of the composition may be prepared by dissolving the primary aromatic amine in hydrochloric acid and water, cooling the solution to 0‹ C. with ice, adding sodium nitrite beneath the surface at such a rate that a slight excess of nitrous acid is always present, adding the reaction mixture when diazotization is complete to a solution or suspension of the secondary amine and sodium hydrogen carbonate in water at 10‹ C., stirring the reaction mixture and allowing it to reach room temperature, continuing stirring and filtering, washing and drying the product.
