Abstract

1472810 Solvent extraction of coal COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 24 Oct 1975 [19 Nov 1974] 50105/74 Heading C5E Coal digest is produced by heating coal at 300-500‹ C. with a liquid digestant which comprises an aromatic petroleum fraction having an atomic hydrogen : carbon ratio of under 1À1 and boiling within the range 200-520‹ C. and filtering undissolved matter from the digest. The aromatic petroleum fraction can be carbon black oil, thermal tar, cat. cracking slurry (i.e. decant oil) or coker gas oil. The liquid digestant can also comprise anthracene oil. The filtered digest can be used to produce coke for electrodes by direct heating or delayed coking; the solvent distilled during the coking can be recycled and any coke produced from the liquid digestant is compatible with that produced from the coal digest. Examples compare the use of a carbon black oil with that of an anthracene oil and a 350-525‹ C. boiling point cut of a crude oil in the digestion of coal.
