Abstract

1472111 Cooling rolled products WEAN UNITED Inc 21 March 1974 [23 March 1973] 12612/74 Heading B3M [Also in Division C7] Steel rod emerging from a hot rolling mill 10 is passed through one or more cooling units 20 providing adjustable cooling conditions whereby the rod is cooled rapidly to a desired transformation temperature while its surface and core temperatures are equalized; it is then coiled by laying unit 21. Each cooling unit 20 incorporates a series of water spray units 19 (Fig. 4) individually adjustable under the control of a computer 129 which receives inputs from temperature sensors 124, 126 and 128, together with inputs 131, 133 indicating the settings of the spray units and inputs representing the target temperatures at the intermediate and final stages of cooling. Each quench unit comprises a manifold 80 from which water is discharged on to the rod through orifices 84, the effective number of which is controlled by an axially adjustable sleeve 88 mounted on crosshead 92 which is driven by pinion 98 which engages gear rack 96.
